Feb 1, 2016 - Download LDOCE5 Viewer for free. LDOCE5 Viewer - This is a viewer app for the Longman dictionary of contemporary English.

It appears there is an unofficial patch which fixes many of the LDOCE’s shortcomings (thanks are due to my readers who told me about it). Here are the main fixes:

• Mousewheel scrolling works (still a little too slow for my liking).
• Keyboard scrolling is fixed for the most part (there are still occasional problems with PgUp)
• You can select any text and right-click it to copy it to the clipboard.
• The PopUp mode window can now be resized. This is probably the most convenient way to use LDOCE, as it has very few distractions. I’ve noticed that in the PopUp mode, LDOCE tries to look up every piece of text you copy to the clipboard. To turn this off, you have to right-click the QuickFind icon in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen) and choose Exit.
• You now get the dictionary window immediately after startup rather than having to click Dictionary.

The only big problem that hasn’t been fixed is the startup time. It still takes about 10 seconds to open the dictionary.

Installation

Installation is not a one-click affair, so I would not recommend it to inexperienced PC users. Perhaps you can ask your friendly neighborhood geek. Here are the steps:

1. Get the patch (RAR archive) from here.
2. Extract the archive to some folder. If you have 7-zip, you can right-click the archive file, then choose 7-Zip, Extract here. You can download 7-zip for free.
3. Open the folder where you extracted the archive. Inside it, find the chrome folder.
4. Locate the LDOCE program folder. It’s usually at C:Program FilesLongmanLDOCE5. You should see a chrome subfolder in it.
5. Copy the chrome folder from the patch folder to the LDOCE program folder, so that it overwrites the original chrome folder.
6. Windows will ask you a number of questions. You want to replace files in the original chrome folder. You may have to provide administrator credentials to do this.

You can use the online version of the LDOCE, which is probably easier for inexperienced users.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

FOR WINDOWS:
-- Insert the LDOCE 5 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
-- The installation should start automatically.

If the installation does not start automatically:
1. Open 'My Computer'.
2. Right-click on the on the LDOCE5 CD-ROM icon.
3. Click on “Open”.
4. Double-click on setup.exe.
5. Follow the instructions that appears on the screen.
6. Leave the CD-ROM in the computer the first time you use the program.

Install Patch and DirectX
7. If you run into any issues, click here to download and install the patch.
8. After installing patch, install Microsoft DirectX. Click here to download and install DirectX.
9. Restart your computer and then try to use the software.

FOR MAC:
Drag the application bundle (named 'ldoce5.app') and the data folder (named
'ldoce5.data') to a directory on your hard drive where you want to install the
application. The application will not work from the CD, nor will it work without
the data folder. Double-click on the application bundle to start the
application.

FOR LINUX:

Pre-requisites: if you want the installer to launch in graphic mode, you
need libgtk1.2. Otherwise, the installer will fall back to starting on a
terminal.

To install the application, open the CD-ROM in a file browser or via the
command-line, navigate to the 'linux' directory and launch the 'setup.sh'.
Nautilus might ask you if you want to execute the file on a terminal, or simply
execute it. It is not necessary to start it on a terminal.

Depending on your distribution, the CD-ROM might be mounted as 'noexec' -
meaning that no program may be executed directly from the CD-ROM. This is meant
as a security. Unfortunately, this will also prevent the installation program
from being launched. Short of modifying this behaviour (please refer to the
documentation of your distribution for further explanations), you should execute
the following:

Silent hunter 3 mods. - copy the 'linux' and 'ldoce5.data' folders on your hard drive (for instance
in the '/tmp' directory)
- navigate to the 'linux' directory you just copied and set the executable
permission on 'setup.sh'
- launch 'setup.sh' (see above)
